- Leviticus 16:17 And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the
congregation when he goes in to make an atonement in the holy place,
until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his
household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

- The Tabernacle of Moses was a type and shadow of the true tabernacle in
heaven. In Hebrews 8:1-2, 5, 9:24 it is written:
- Hebrews 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We
have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of
the Majesty in the heavens
- Hebrews 8:2 A minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which
the Lord pitched and not man.

- Hebrews 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things as
Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle:
for, See, says he that you make all things according to the pattern
shown to you in the mount. (Exodus / Shemot 25:9)
- Hebrews 9:24 For Messiah is not entered into the holy places made with
hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven itself now to
appear in the presence of God for us:

- Aaron was a priest of the Levitical priesthood. Yeshua is the great High
Priest of the Brit Chadashah / ReNEWed Testament.
- Hebrews 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,
consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Messiah Yeshua
- Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest that is passed
into the heavens Yeshua the Son of God let us hold fast our profession.

- Aaron was the high priest of the nation of Israel who played the role of
mediator and intercessor for the sins of the nation of Israel on Yom
Kippur. Our mediator and intercessor in the Brit Chadasha / ReNEWed
Covenant is Yeshua.

- Yeshua is not only our High Priest but He is also the mediator between
God the Father and the sin of mankind.
- 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men,
the man Messiah Yeshua

that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that

- In order to appear before the God of Israel in the Holy of Holies, Aaron
needed to wash himself in water.
- Leviticus 16:3 Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place ...
- Leviticus 16:4 He shall put on the holy linen coat and he shall have the
linen breeches upon his flesh and shall be girded with a linen girdle
and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments;
therefore shall he wash his flesh in water and so put them on.

- In order for our sins to be forgiven, we need to be washed by the water
of the living Torah, Yeshua HaMashiach, and His Word. In Jeremiah 17:13
it is written:
- Jeremiah 17:13 O Lord, the hope (Strong number: <04723> which is
the Hebrew word, ‘Mikvah’ (immersion) hwEq.m)i ) of Israel all that forsake
you shall be ashamed and they that depart from me shall be written in
the earth because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living
waters.

- Ezekiel 36:25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you and you shall be
clean: from all your filthiness and from all your idols will I cleanse
you.

- We need to be born of water to enter the Kingdom of the God of Israel.
In John 3:1-5 it is written:
- John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of the
Jews:
- John 3:2 The same came to Yeshua by night and said unto him Rabbi, we
know that you are a teacher come from God: for no man can do these
miracles that you do except God be with him.

- John 3:3 Yeshua answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto
you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
- John 3:4 Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old?
can he enter the second time into his mother's womb and be born?
- John 3:5 Yeshua answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of

are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of YHVH Yeshua and by

- Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith

- In high priest ceremony of
atonement, Aaron took a bull and made atonement for himself and
his household.
- Leviticus 16:6 And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering,
which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself and for his
house.

- Next, Aaron took two goats and cast lots for them. One goat was labeled,
‘To YHVH’. The other goat was labeled, ‘To Azazel’.
- Leviticus 16:5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of
Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt
offering.
- Leviticus 16:7 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before
the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
- Leviticus 16:8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for
YHVH and the other lot for the scapegoat.

- The goat upon whom fell the lot, ‘To YHVH’ was given to be a sin
offering for the nation of Israel.
- Leviticus 16:9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the YHVH’S lot
fell and offer him for a sin offering.
- Leviticus 16:15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering that is for
the people and bring his blood within the veil and do with that blood as
he did with the blood of the bullock and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat
and before the mercy seat:

- Yeshua was a type of the goat labeled, ‘To YHVH’. When Yeshua died on
the tree, He became a sin offering unto God the Father for the sins of
the entire world.
- Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the
Lord revealed?
- Isaiah 53:4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows: yet
we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted.
- Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised
for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with
his stripes we are healed.

- The high priest would pronounce the name YHVH ten times on Yom Kippur.
Three times during each of his confessions and once when he cast lots to
select the goat to be offered as a sin offering and the other goat to be
sent into the wilderness. When the goat selected to be the sin offering
was identified through the casting of lots, the high priest would say
that it was sanctified as a sin-offering to the God of Israel using the divine
name, YHVH. (The Book of Our Heritage by Eliyahu Kitov, Volume 1, Page

- When the priests and the people gathered in the courtyard would hear the
high priest pronounce the divine name, YHVH, they would kneel, bow down
and fall on their faces crying: ‘Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuto L’olam Va’ed’
which translates as, ‘Blessed be the name of His glorious Kingdom
forever and ever.’ (Book of our Heritage, Volume 1, page 97)

- The Talmud in Yoma 41b describes this event.
- He [the high priest] bound
a thread of crimson wool on the head of the he‑goat which was to
be sent away, and [meantime] he
placed it [at the gate] whence it was to be sent away; and the
he‑goat that was to be slaughtered, at the place of the
slaughtering, he came to his bullock a second time, pressed his two
hands upon it and made confession. And thus he would say: O Lord, I have
dealt wrongfully, I have transgressed, I have sinned before thee, I and
my house, and the children of Aaron, thy holy people, O Lord, pray
forgive the wrongdoings, the transgression, and the sins, which I have
committed, transgressed, and sinned before thee, I and my house, and the
children of Aaron, your holy people. As it is written in the Torah of
Moses, your servant: for on this day atonement be made for you, to
cleanse you; from all the sins shall you be clean before the Lord. And they
responded: Blessed be the name of his glorious kingdom for ever and ever.

- The goat upon whom fell the lot, ‘To Azazel’ was sent into the wilderness. Before
the goat was sent out, the high priest laid his hands upon the head of
the goat and confessed the sins of the nation of Israel putting the sins
of the nation of Israel upon the goat. In Leviticus / Vayikra 16:10,
20-22 it is written:
- Leviticus 16:10 But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat
shall be presented alive before the Lord to make an atonement with him and
to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

- Leviticus 16:20 And when he has made an end of reconciling the holy place
and the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, he shall bring the
live goat:
- Leviticus 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live
goat and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel
and all their transgressions in all their sins putting them upon the
head of the goat and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into
the wilderness:
- Leviticus 16:22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities
unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the
wilderness.

- The Hebrew word for ‘Azazel’ is scapegoat. Azazel was seen as a type of Satan
(HaSatan) in the extra-biblical book of Enoch 8:1. The sins being laid
upon Azazel and being sent into the wilderness can be seen as a type of judgment
upon Satan (HaSatan) who will be cast into the lake of fire.
- Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake
of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are and
shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

- One of the customs of Yom Kippur is that a crimson sash was tied around the horns
of the goat labeled, ‘To Azazel’. Why was a crimson sash used? It is
explained in the Talmud in Shabbat 86a that it is based upon Isaiah / Yeshayahu
1:18 which is written:
- Isaiah 1:18 Come now and let us reason together says the Lord: though your
sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow; though they be red
like crimson, they shall be as wool.

- In the Talmud it says:
- How do we know that a crimson‑coloured strap is tied to the head
of the goat that is sent [to ‘azaz'el]? because it is said, If your sins
be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow (Shabbat 86a)
- The Talmud describes how the goat led into the wilderness was cast off a
cliff as it says:
- What did he do? He divided the thread of crimson wool and tied one half
to the rock, the other half between its horns and pushed it from behind.
And it went rolling down and before it had reached half its way down
hill it was dashed to pieces (Yoma 67a)

- Another custom is that a crimson wool thread was tied to the entrance of
the Ulam at the Temple. It was considered a sign that the God of Israel
had forgiven the sins of the nation of Israel if the crimson wool thread
turned white after the goat labeled, ‘Azazel’ was cast off a cliff into
the wilderness.

- In the Talmud Yoma 67a, it says:
- Our Rabbis taught: In the beginning they would tie the thread of crimson
wool on the entrance of the Ulam (The Hall leading to the interior of
the Temple) without: if it became white they rejoiced; if it did not
become white, they were sad and ashamed. Thereupon they arranged to tie
it to the entrance of the Ulam within. But they were still peeping
through and if it became white, they rejoiced, whereas, if it did not
become white, they grew sad and ashamed. Thereupon they arranged to tie
one half to the rock and the other half between its horns.

- R. Nahum b. Papa said in the name of R. Eleazar ha‑Kappar:
Originally they used to tie the thread of crimson wool to the entrance
of the Ulam within, and as soon as the he‑goat reached the wilderness,
it turned white. Then they knew that the commandment concerning it had
been fulfilled, as it is said: If your sins be as scarlet, they shall be
as white wool (Yoma 67a)

- It is recorded in the Talmud that 40 years prior to the destruction of
the Temple in 70 C.E., the crimson wool thread at the Temple did not
turn white. In the Talmud it says:
- Our Rabbis taught: During the last forty years before the destruction of
the Temple the lot [‘For the Lord’] did not come up in the right hand; nor
did the crimson‑coloured strap become white ... (Yoma 39a)
- These were the years between the death of Yeshua on the tree and the
destruction of the Temple.

- On Yom Kippur, Aaron wore holy garments.
- Leviticus 16:4 He shall put on the holy linen coat and he shall have the
linen breeches upon his flesh and shall be girded with a linen girdle
and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments;
therefore shall he wash his flesh in water and so put them on.
- Leviticus 16:32 And the priest whom he shall anoint and whom he shall
consecrate to minister in the priest's office in his father's stead
shall make the atonement and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy
garments:

- The high priest changed his clothing five times on Yom Kippur. Each time
he changed his clothing, he immersed himself in a mikveh. During all of
the service inside the Holy of Holies, the high priest would wear white
garments. (Book of Our Heritage,
Volume 1, page 96).

- Dirty garments represent the sin of the world. Believers in Yeshua as
Messiah are commanded to “put off” the sin of the world and “put on” Yeshua.
- Romans 13:14 But put ye on YHVH Yeshua HaMashiach and make not provision

man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

- White garments represent clothes of purity, righteousness and the
wedding dress of a bride. In Job / Iyov 29:14 it is written:
- Job 29:14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as
a robe and a diadem.
- In Psalm / Tehillim 132:9 it is written:
- Psalm 132:9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness; and let your
saints shout for joy.

- White is the wedding dress of the bride.
- Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful
in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has
covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself
with ornaments and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

- It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats be able to take
away sin. In Hebrews 10:1-4 it is written:
- Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not
the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they

should take away sins.

- While the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin, the blood of Yeshua
the Messiah can take away sin.

- Matthew 9:6 But that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth

- Neilah is known as the time of the closing of the gates of heaven.
